The crucifixion and the divine cleansing part 2

Psalm 36 is a Psalm of David, written David evaluated his own heart and sought the forgiveness that God offers. This Psalm divides into two parts, the sinful man (v1-4) and the saved man (v5-12). David begins by sharing 6 things about the sinful man that we all need to understand, so that we can rejoice at the benefits of the salvation brought to us through the Work of God. History is important to us because it is the heritage that shaped the world in which we live. Biblical Christianity and the successful Christian life are inseparably related to the historical deed of God. Christianity does not have an origin or basis in myth, ledged, or religious activity. Christianity, as historical is open to verification. The divine provision in grace is found in the historical deeds performed by Jesus Christ as our representative. Setting Captives Free! Ephesians 4:1-11

As we consider the incarnation of Christ, there are many passages that are difficult for us to understand:  One, such passage that I have been asked to explain is found in Ephesians 4:8 “Therefore it says, when he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.” (ESV) What does it mean “he led a host of captives,”? Who were the captives and why did they need to be set free?
