The foundation for our Faith – John 1:1-2

by Jim Jamison

In John 1:1-2 the apostle John makes three sweeping statements that affirm once and for all that the Jesus that he serves is God. 1. He begins by saying that Jesus is eternally God “In the beginning was the Word” The reference to beginning here is the beginning of the universe depicted in Genesis 1:1. Jesus was already in existence when the heavens and the earth were created. the Word is in the past tense and is describing continual actin in the past, and the significance of this term indicates that the Word always existed, and that there was never a point when He came into being. As the incarnate Word, Jesus is God’s final Word concerning Salvation (Hebrews 1:1-2) 2. Jesus is equally God “and the Word was with God” – this phrase means more than merely that the Word existed with God; it gives the picture of two personal beings facing one another and engaging in intelligent discourse. The Word is a person, not an attribute of God or an emanation from Him….. He is of the same essence as the Father. 3. Jesus is essentially God “And the Word was God. the same was in the beginning … READ MORE

The Deity of Christ – John 1:1-5

by Jim Jamison

The deity of Christ is an essential, non-negotiable tenet of the Christian faith. Several lines of Biblical evidence flow together to prove conclusively that Jesus is God. 1. The direct statements of Scripture affirm that Jesus is God. 2. Jesus receives titles elsewhere in Scripture given to God. 3. Jesus possesses the incommunicable attributes of God. 4. Jesus does the works that only God can do. 5. Jesus received worship – even though He taught that only God is to be worshipped. 6. Jesus received prayer, which is only to be addressed to God. The reality that Jesus is God, introduced in the first five verses of John’s gospel prologue flow evidences of the deity of the incarnate Word. and is expanded thought John’s gospel as he carefully selects the claims and miracles that seal the case. It is because of who Jesus truly is that the truth of salvation can be won by Him, and received by us.… READ MORE

The Gospel of John

by Jim Jamison

We have a clear understanding of why John wrote his gospel. John 20:31 tells us that “these [things] are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” One of the great purposes of this great Gospel written about 90 A.D. is that it was written to remind us of the importance of two things. One, that Jesus is God and therefore able to provide us redemption, and two, as God, He is the only accesses to eternal life (John 14:6). If you have not read this gospel in awhile, it would be beneficial for you to walk through this gospel, and see how Jesus is revealed to be not only the Son of God, but God the Son. John makes it clear that Jesus was not created at the incarnation, but was alive before His incarnation. The value of this is that He has the right, desire, and ABILITY (emphasis mine) to provide us the redemption that He came to provide. As a result we can rest in the assurance of His Word. Take time this week to review this gospel, and rest in … READ MORE
