Victory through the Holy Spirit – Romans 8:5-17

All throughout Romans 8:5-17 the emphasis is placed on the Holy Spirit of God in relation to the believer’s life, and the fact that through the sanctification of the Holy Spirit that life is possible. Here we are reminded of three things: 1. THE BELIEVER’S POWER – The Spirit of God dwells within the believer’s spirit (v9,11) and in proportion as this indwelling is allowed to possess every part or our being. 2. THE BELIEVER’S PURITY – This is made possible by living “after the Spirit” and “minding the Spirit.” The word “mind” always means the entire bent of thought, Feeling, motive, and will, and when this is realized and our whole inner being is turned definitely and constantly in the direction of the Holy Spirit, purity becomes our very life. 3. THE BELIEVER’S PROSPECT – The indwelling of the Spirit is associated with our resurrection. We are reminded in verse 11 that the Holy Spirit’s possession of us is the assurance that the body in which he has lived will be raised from the dead and quickened into immortal and everlasting life. Overcoming Sin – Romans :12-13

Overcoming sin our lives is a lifelong process. The issue often is, “How do I overcome sin in my life?” Let me share with you some steps you can take to overcome sin in our lives. 1. Recognize the presence of sin our flesh – “Romans 7:21 “… When I would do good, evil is present with me.” 2. Have a heart fixed on God – Psalm 57:7 “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise.” 3. Meditate on God’s Word – Psalm 119:11 “Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” 4. Commune regularly with God is prayer. – I Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray without ceasing” 5. Practice obedience – I John 3:9 “Whosoever is born of God doth not practice sin…” 6. Seek a godly accountability to remain pure – James 5:14 “Is any among you weak? Let them call for the elders of the church …” Living the Spirit-filled life does not come through mystical application, but from studying and submitting ourselves to the Word of God.… READ MORE

Victory over defeat – Romans 8:5-17

Since Pentecost, the Holy Spirit has indwelt all believers from the moment of their conversion to Christ. He provides the ability to understand and apply God’s Word as well as empowering them for growth in their Christian lives. In Romans 8:-17 we continue to have revealed the innumerable results of justification, specifically the marvelous,. benefits of the spirit’s ministry of providing freedom from defeat in the Christian life. In this passage it is revealed that the Spirit changes our nature and grants us strength for victory over the unredeemed flesh that we struggle with in our lives. We need to be reminded that while their is a struggle between our desires of the flesh and our desires to please God, the victory has been won, through the ability to apply the Word of God to our minds which will help us deal with the short term pleasures of the hear and now, and live for the long term gains of serving God.
