Obedience is a hallmark of genuine saving faith and love for God. Throughout His ministry, Jesus repeatedly emphasized that obedience will characterize all who believe in Him for Salvation. John emphasized the inseparable link between love and obedience in John 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” In John 14:15-26, Jesus promised the disciples (and all subsequent believers) 4 permanent sources of power and comfort. Lets look at His legacy, as He continues to provide for us:
#1 The Presence of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17): Jesus starts by promising “Another Helper” (one like Him) to all who love Him, and that “Helper” would “direct them to the truth that He taught the disciples”
#2 The Presence of the Son (John 14:18-20): Jesus promises that He will not leave us alone, but by the Power of the Holy Spirit, He will dwell with us and us with Him.
#3 The Presence of the Father (John 14:21-24): Only those who obey His “commandments” enter into union with Christ, which is the outworking of the Holy Spirit, which unites us permanently with the Father.
#4 The Presence of the Truth (John 14:25-26): Throughout Jesus ministry, He had been the source of truth for the disciples, but just as He would not leave them without a source of comfort, He would also not leave the disciples without a source of truth.
The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to teach us the truth of what Christ said to the church, not to reveal to us new truth for the church. In the same way that the promise of God’s presence heartened the disciples 2 millennia ago, it should still bring confidence and courage to believers today. .
