When we say we are apart of the Body of Christ, what do we really mean? Consider this: A body is what represents who we are! When we think of a person, we think of them in terms of the physical identity that is represented in our mind by their appearance. But the reality is that we are so much more complicated than our physical presence. We are also identified by the personality that is manifested by that physical presence. When we succumb to death, we do not cease to be who we are, but our physical presence remains behind. Now take that to the reality of the Body of Christ. As a follower of Jesus Christ, we are the physical presence of His being to this world. Jesus resides at the right hand of the Father, but the reality of His person is seen in those who are His representatives here in this world. Therefore, the local church is to be a physical manifestation to the world of the reality of Christ. The purpose of the coming of the Holy Spirit (John 14-16) is to provide that body with the resources necessary to make Christ’s presence felt in this world. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, makes you a unique part of that body, and according to 1 Corinthians 12 you are a vital part of the functioning of the body. Jesus did not save you to simply sit, soak, and sour, He saved you to be a functioning part of His body, and a vital part of the work of the local church. Fulfil your purpose, get involved in the work of Christ.
