Knowing God – John 17:3

by Jim Jamison

I enjoy reading historical novels. One of my Favorite is “The Frontiersman” by Allen Eckert. I have not only read the book several times, I have viewed the outdoor drama several times because I enjoy the way he makes Simon Kenton and Tecumseh come alive. I could say that I know them, but yet, I really only know about them. Interest in theology, and knowledge about God, and the capacity to think clearly and talk well on Christian themes, is not at all the same thing as knowing God. We may know as much about God as John Calvin knew and yet not know God at all. Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 12:12 “Of making many books there is no end; and much study is a wariness of the flesh. The question is not whether we are good at theology, or balanced in our approach to the problems of Christian living; the question is can we say, simply, honestly, and sincerely, that we know God! This morning’s challenge is to ask myself if I know God, or if I know about Him. I am amazed that if I were in a crowd that God would be able to recognize me and … READ MORE

God’s Gift of the Woman – Genesis 2:20-25

by Jim Jamison

The Biblical account of the woman’s remarkable creating, given to us in Genesis 2:20-25, is absolutely remarkable. The Hebrew expression describing how God “Mad [the rib] into a woman [“Ishah”} denotes careful construction and design. Literally, it means God built a woman He carefully assembled a whole new creature with just the right set of attributes to make her the ideal mate for man [Adam]. Specially created buy God for Adam from his own flesh and bone, “Ishah” suited Adam perfectly in every way. She is a wonderful illustration of the goodness of God’ grace, and the perfect wisdom of His will. God made her while Adam was asleep, without any tips or suggestions from Adam. Yet she perfectly met every need Adam had, satisfied every longing he may ever have felt, and delighted every faulty of his senses. She answered his need for companionship; she was a source of joy and gladness to him and she made possible the procreation of the human race. She complemented Adam perfectly, and she enhanced everything about his existence. Man (Hebrew “Ish”) must have been overjoyed to have this woman (“Ishah”) in his life. His first words upon meeting her express a profound … READ MORE

God reveals himself to man – Romans 1:20

by Jim Jamison

If we are going to see God accurately, we have to see Him as He has revealed Himself to us. Psalm 19:1 tells us, “The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows his handywork.” Everyone on earth who sees the sky, stars, and the sunset has seen the creativity of God. It does not hurt us to sit and consider nature, but this will only give us a partial picture of who God is. Creation can stir us to know God more, but if we want to know more of God, we must turn to His Word. John 1:1 says, “In the Beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” God is the original communicator, and He created us as receptors of His Word. It is essential that we understand that in order to understand Who God really is, we can not do so only with our senses, we must do so with our minds, as we embrace the truths of God’s Word. Yet God’s written Word is not an end in itself. The continuation of John’s thought in John 1:1 is seen in John 1:14, “The Word was made … READ MORE
