Dominion: Our Privilege – Genesis 1:26

by Jim Jamison

While man has fallen and is guilty of sin, he has not lost his ability to have dominion over the world that God has created for him. We have done some amazing things in the last 100 years: – We have devised technology that has allowed us to cultivate only a fraction of the earth’s potential farmland and still grow enough crops to feed the world. – We have traveled to the moon and back – We have developed amazing communications networks. – We are able to travel across vast continents by air in a few hours. – We have build dams to create large reservoirs for power, and entertainment. – We have developed medical technology that has prolonged life. Even in man’s fallen state, the human being is a wonderful creature, still endued with the image of his Maker. That is why God sees us as worthwhile redeeming, this is why He sent His only Son to die for our sins! Christ is able to do what fallen man has been unable to do. He has destroyed all the power of the devil (1 John 3:8). That victory was already sealed when Christ rose from the dead, and all … READ MORE

Dominion: How it affects our position – Genesis 1:26

by Jim Jamison

According to Genesis 11:26 Creation was to submit to the rule of Man. Before sin entered the world this was an easy and pleasant assignment for Adam. It was no doubt a source of great joy. Imagine working in a garden that was sweatless, weedless, and curse-free! Adam was given both dominion over God’s creation and the responsibility to care for it. Because of sin we battle with creation today. Yet, we must understand that our working is not apart of the curse of God. We are created for a purpose, and that purpose is to be busy in our lives. It doesn’t matter how “valuable” you deem your job, or responsibilities, the fact remains that you are given a role in God’s kingdom, and it is our stewardship responsibility to serve in our capacity to the glory of God. There are no insignificant jobs in God’s kingdom, only small people who believe that what some (including themselves) contribute are not important. God created us with a purpose, and that purpose is to give life and vitality within the created realm. Today, fulfill your role, with satisfaction and purpose.… READ MORE

Dominion: How it affects our person – Genesis 1:26

by Jim Jamison

What does the fact that we are given dominion over the earth mean in Genesis 1:26? Well in regard to our person it means that we are created to learn and grow. As humans we do not do what we do primarily by instinct we do it by intellect as we learn and grow. This means we can change the way we interact with our environment. Ephesians 4:22-24 reminds us that we can “put off the old man…through the renewing of our minds …. and put on the new man” We can use our minds to change what we do and who we are. It also affects the way we live and develop. This means that as created we can change our environment and not just adapt to it, Mankind has the ability to develop initiatives, based on their ability to conceive of them. It also means that we are able to lead and guide. We have the ability to serve one another rather than dominate each other. Galatians 5:13 reminds us that we have the ability to serve one another in love. We must remember that dominion was not given to us to dominate the world but so that … READ MORE
